Accounting has more credible AI than almost any other profession, and it is unusually dependent on one thing: whether your coding is consistent between the people doing it.
Dext, Vic.ai and Xero's automation all learn from how transactions have been categorised historically. Where two bookkeepers code the same supplier three different ways, the tool learns the inconsistency and reproduces it faster. Firms tend to read that as the tool underperforming. It is the tool performing exactly as designed on the data it was given.
The same applies further up. Practice management AI can predict which jobs will overrun, but only if job records reflect what actually happened rather than what was budgeted. Reporting tools can flag anomalies in client accounts, but only against a chart of accounts used the same way each period.
This assessment weights Process and Data most heavily, and asks the questions that decide whether the automation you are being sold will hold: how consistent your coding is, how client records are maintained, and what happens at handover when a job moves between people.
